Habitat for Humanity Honduras began supporting local families through building in 1989 in the area of Santa Cruz de Yojoa. Since then it has partnered with church groups, universities, non-governmental organizations, humanitarian foundations, and countless caring individuals to construct over 6,000 houses in 50 different communities, and it is still growing. Habitat Honduras has expanded its operations to include seven regional affiliate offices throughout the country, along with its National office based in San Pedro Sula.
Habitat for Humanity International created the Global Village program in 1989 as a way to organize the immense amount of resoures and individual time donated each year to participate in international work teams. Habitat Honduras received its first Global Village team in 1994 and since has served host to thousands of individuals from across the globe. After Hurricane Mitch in 1998, GV workteams were integral in rebuilding a number of communities devastated by the powerful storm. |
