The La Ceiba Affiliate was founded in June 2003.  Habitat Honduras started projects in this area with the initial goal of 12 houses per year, despite a calculated housing deficit of 10,000 houses.  Around 150 new homes have been built so far with Gustavo Rodriguez, the affiliate coordinator, focused on building 89 additional houses in 2007, increasing funding and developing new activities with the help of the local volunteer committee.  The La Ceiba affiliate is also supported by two fulltime Peace Corps. volunteers.

General Information:
La Ceiba is the third largest city in Honduras, with an approximate population of 130,000.  It is probably the country's most vibrant city, as well
as being relatively young.  The capital of the department of Atlantida (one of Honduras' 18 departments), it is named after the giant Ceiba trees that grew near the beach and provided shade to dock workers and locals during hot afternoons.  La Ceiba's thriving economy is based largely on income from tourism and surrounding pineapple plantations.  Expect steamy weather with temperatures ranging between 85-100 F most of the year and large amounts of rain from November to January.
